ASER Reading Tool


The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER), a household survey undertaken in rural India, measures the enrolment status of children between 3-16 years and tests basic reading and arithmetic abilities of children through a detailed process that uses a common set of testing tools and a comprehensive sampling framework.
The ASER reading assessment tool consists of 4 levels: letters; words; a short paragraph; and a longer “story”. The child is marked at the highest level which she can comfortably complete. The tools are available in 16 Indian languages apart from English. Pratham also provides some preparation guides and manuals for facilitators and educationists administering the tool.
